Retirement Time
Another life milestone.
On Friday, March 30, 2018, I retired from the University of Mary Washington where I served as Director of Student Health/University Physician for eleven years. I have been in school and/or working continuously for more than 50 years, yet on this day, I relinquished my educational degrees, my medical license, my professional standing. I am no longer a physician and a productive member of society living a life of structure and purpose.
And … I accepted getting old.
Will retirement be a perpetual vacation; lazy, idle days filled with mind candy? I don’t know. I have plans, hobbies, and interests, things I want to do but at the same time, I want to slow down, spend more time doing less.
I crave time. Lots of time. Uninterrupted time. Unhurried time. Interesting time. Curious time. Deliberate time. Flow time. Slow time. My time.
I traded my profession and a paycheck for time.
My precious remaining time will be savored to the fullest. Let the journey begin!
