Skyloft

Skyloft

The term “Man Cave” just doesn’t suit me.

Tom's garage office
Skyloft

Here is my “Skyloft”, a term Morgan suggested and I liked. Located on the second (loft) floor of the two-car garage, it has received major renovation by my friends Jeff and Beth Claypoole. They led the way in design, planning, and execution transforming it into a great workspace.

First used as a functioning business office by the previous owner, it sort of collected things over the past two decades. Here is where it stands prior to me moving my scanner, laser printer, etc from UMW. Work tables around three walls and a center work table on sliders. You can see a dual monitor setup (both are 27″ but they look small in this space) for my Windows machine, a Linux machine on the left with space for VHS and Vinyl transcoding, a table for the laser, label, multifunction, and photo printers. Far right along the wall is a table for paper, labels, and other consumables. The work table has a nautical chart to learn navigation. Unseen are bookcases and a closet. the big walls call for a big TV or at least some of my photos.

I love this space!

Here is a list of Jeff and Beth’s magic. Thank you!

  • Cut an access door into the eave, installing lights, switch, and flooring.
  • Wired cable and internet from the house.
  • Installed a “Skyloft” router (was tempted to call it “Skynet”).
  • Repaired and painted walls and ceiling.
  • Installed chair railing.
  • Removed old, bulky fluorescent units and installed recessed LED lighting with dimmers.
  • Removed a broken, very heavy, commercial, wall-mounted AC unit.
  • Repaired the wall and siding after the removal of the unit.
  • Replaced the flimsy, insecure, closet grade door with a new fiberglass door.
  • New locks
  • Installed Mitsubishi AC/heat unit, “mini-split”.
  • Reroofed the front of the garage replacing damaged plywood.
  • Replaced all windows in the garage including the two dormer windows in the loft.
  • New leaf-free gutters.
  • Wall-mounted bookcase
  • We left the original carpet but had it professionally cleaned.
