Walk this Way

Walk this Way

Finally, I feel that my quest to become handy has some success. While at the Outer Banks, this summer, I learned to lay patio blocks in the sand to create a stable patio. On returning home I used this new skill on a long-standing problem.

Many winters ago, I put big-box-bought deicing salt on the walkway connecting the sunroom to the garage. It quickly spalled the concrete creating a mess. Several years ago, in preparation for repaving the driveway, we removed the damaged concrete leaving a large trench that filled with water during rainstorms.

My prehandy self put a few concrete blocks at the base of the stairs but didn’t try to restore a walkway. Enter the patio blocks.

Before. With the concrete removed it was basically a wading trough. The stack of concrete blocks was at the base of the stairs to provide a dry step up to the deck stairway.
Another view before.
Delivering 16″ patio block, a bit heavy to work with. The sand was a prior truckload but I failed to get a picture of that delivery using Jeff’s truck.
Starting to lay 35 blocks. I have to align the edges, level the blocks, and even up the heights. I use the mallet to pound the block to compact the sand, a very satisfying activity!
Further in the process.
Came out pretty good.
We will see how long the sand remains.
