Turning 68

Turning 68

On Palm Sunday, March 25, 2018, I turned 68 years old.  It reminded me of my sixth birthday in 1956, sitting in a Westhampton Methodist Church pew celebrating Palm Sunday. The world was fresh and new.  For years after that, I wondered when it would happen again.  Well, 62 years later, my birthday was once again on Palm Sunday. I wanted to “bookend” … sit in the same pew in the same church on Palm Sunday. Morgan and I attended the 11 AM…

Skyloft

Skyloft

The term “Man Cave” just doesn’t suit me. Here is my “Skyloft”, a term Morgan suggested and I liked. Located on the second (loft) floor of the two-car garage, it has received major renovation by my friends Jeff and Beth Claypoole. They led the way in design, planning, and execution transforming it into a great workspace.

Legacy

Legacy

My father, “PopPop” loved to woodwork, spending hours making furniture, toys, knick-knacks, Christmas gifts, and lots of sawdust. Many years after his death I was fortunate to move his old shop equipment into my garage but had not used much of it until last week. As part of my home renovation, Jeff and I have been working on the one and a half story two-car garage. We purged my home office on the back left in April 2017 for a…

Methylation

Methylation

Why are you blogging about methylation? Well, as it turns out, I have major genetic flaws in methylation which explain (but don’t excuse) some of my lifelong physical and mental problems. This is a big topic now in Integrative Medicine with new information every year.  Hmmm … can you explain a little more? Sure. Methylation is a biochemical term. A “methyl group” is a simple structure, a carbon atom with three hydrogen atoms attached. The process of “methylation” takes place on a…

Grumpy Old Men

Grumpy Old Men

Ah, the phrase has a nice ring to it. In 1993 this comedy starring Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau set the stage for the 43-year-old me. Fourteen years later, I arrived at the University of Mary Washington and quickly found my lunch table tribe, grumpy old professors and staff. Sharp-witted, funny, and irreverent this group of men and women provided a source of entertainment, philosophy, and education for eleven years. Once numbering in the dozens, this cast of characters dwindled…

Experience is a hard teacher

Experience is a hard teacher

“Experience is a hard teacher because she gives the test first, the lesson afterward.” – Vernon Sanders Law How true. You live life forward but only truly understand it looking backward. We all have had that “if I only knew then what I know now” experience.

Last Chance Brigade

Last Chance Brigade

“It seems the overriding qualification for solo sailing is advanced age, being a paid-up member of the Last Chance Brigade. Time is running out as the years of procrastination accumulate towards a crisis. Grandpa, casting off the responsible years of family and school fees, enjoys a financial second wind. The prospect of dying and not knowing becomes more scary than the prospect of going.”  – Singlehanded Sailing by Andrew Evans   This great quote from Andrew Evans describes not just solo…
